Abstract

This study aims to analyze the needs for developing a contextual digital module for learning verb tenses among students of the D-IV Software Engineering Technology Study Program, Vocational Program, Universitas Negeri Gorontalo. The research employed a qualitative descriptive approach within the framework of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), encompassing three components of needs analysis: learners’ needs, learning needs, and target use needs. Data were collected through a student needs questionnaire (n=29), semi-structured interviews with external stakeholders namely English lecturers and IT industry practitioners and a review of instructional documents. The findings revealed that, in terms of learners’ needs, students demonstrated basic understanding of verb tenses but faced difficulties in contextual application, particularly in distinguishing between the simple past and present perfect tenses. A total of 72.4% of students reported a lack of context-based practice. Regarding learning needs, 34.5% expressed a preference for interactive digital media that provide concise theoretical explanations accompanied by contextual examples in the IT field. From the perspective of target use needs, both students and practitioners emphasized that mastery of verb tenses is essential for professions such as programmers, software engineers, and system analysts, as it contributes to clarity in cross-team technical communication. The study recommends the development of a digital module based on Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) principles, integrating IT case studies, reflective exercises, and automated feedback. The results provide a conceptual foundation for subsequent Research and Development (R&D) phases in designing contextual and application-oriented English language learning for vocational education.
